I first read your story on LumberJocks and knew this to be as I felt Sam was. I had just visited his home and sat in a rocking chair he had made when I had read your story. I went into the living room and took the piece of black walnut that he had signed for me and probibly felt in some small way what you had felt with Sam’s gift.

  2. This is such a touching and inspiring story! I *gasped* out loud when the rocker hit the floor, and I think I would’ve been right there with you, walking out of the shop and never looking back. What a great guy Sam was. (I have to say it: your wife is pretty smart, too!)

Yes, I have to say I have the greatest wife on the planet. She always knows just the right thing to do in every situation. Oh, and she supports my really expensive hobbies.

I received the package from Sam almost a year to the day he died. I kept meaning to display the arm he made somewhere, but as usual it got stuck away in a box. When I heard he had passed I pulled it out and it is sitting on my desk. I really hope that one day I can do the same for another woodworker and keep them motivated when the going gets tough.
